What size should the icon be?

I created my icon in the size 512x512 after reading in the docs, but when I zoom out in Photoshop, it looks terrible, you can’t even read the words I put in there and everything is just blurry… Is the size of the icon supposed to be 512 512? Depends which icon you’re talking about, there are several. And value judgements like “terrible” are relative, if you post your image we may be able to see if you are doing something wrong. [import]uid: 12108 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23527[/import]

I’ve made an example to illustrate:

I’m trying to make an icon for an iPhone app, but don’t know what size it should be… From the docs it said 512x512, are the docs outdated or is this the way to go? [import]uid: 30185 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23539[/import]

That’s 512x512? geez how big is your monitor?

That’s the size of the icon in iTunes. On device the icon is 57x57 for older phones and 114x114 for Retina displays. [import]uid: 12108 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23564[/import]

The image is zoomed out to illustrate the problem, that’s how it would look like when in iTunes [import]uid: 30185 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23647[/import]

Why would you zoom out? You should view them at 100% to be accurate. I wouldn’t resize your images in Photoshop as the result would just make your image pixelated and choppy. Instead, create a new one at the size you need or use a vector based drawing program such as Illustrator to create, scale and save as png. [import]uid: 8891 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23830[/import]

Heh, I don’t zoom out when I work with them of course. I zoomed out to see how it would look like when displayed in smaller size, for example as an icon on the iPhone. Do you mean I should just create it in the size that the iPhone uses? 57x57? I chose 512x512 because that’s what the docs said.

What size does everyone else use, 512x512?? [import]uid: 30185 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23855[/import]

You will need more that just the one icon size of 512x512. There is more information on what sizes should be included in your app bundle on pages 10 - 11 of the iTunesConnect Developers Guide.

https://itunesconnect.apple.com/docs/iTunesConnect_DeveloperGuide.pdf

I have a universal app (iPhone/iPad) on the App Store and it includes 6 sizes of icon files.
Icon.png (57x57)
Icon@2x.png (114x114)
Icon-Small.png (29x29)
Icon-Small@2x.png (58x58)
Icon-72.png (72x72)
Icon-Small-50.png (50x50)

And of course an icon for iTunes (512x512) which is not within the app, but uploaded to iTunesConnect as well as some screen shots of the app.

Yeah but, in what size did you create the icon? Did you create 6 separate icons in 6 different sizes or did you just create 1 icon in the size 512x512 and scaled it down to 57x57 and 114x114 etc? [import]uid: 30185 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23868[/import]

I created 6 separate icons in their respective size as I didn’t want the iPhone or iPad to do the scaling and mess up the resolution. I also didn’t scale my artwork as an bitmap image as this would produce the effect that you see in your Photoshop screenshot. I did all my artwork in Illustrator (there are free tools out there) and scaling a vector graphic won’t give your icon the jaggies when you save it out as a png file at the final dimensions. Alright, thanks:)! [import]uid: 30185 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 23878[/import]

I find that manually scaling my 512x512 image down to the correct sizes works fine in terms of quality. I’m not using vector art since my icon is derived from a hand-drawn image – that wouldn’t work.

For text on the icons, though, each small icon might need tweaking to make sure it’s still legible.

Just saw this tool, Icon Robot – haven’t tried it yet or compared the quality with Photoshop image scaling, but looks like this could save a lot of time when you have to make changes to your icons:

what size do icons have to be for Android and what names should the be…and lastly do they show up in trial version (Windows) [import]uid: 40581 topic_id: 6726 reply_id: 29997[/import]
