What's mesh rendering in 2D animation?

I am looking to use Spine for 2D animation and I contacted their support. And they say Corona does not support mesh rendering.

(1) Anyone can explain what mesh rendering is and if Corona doesn’t support it, what’s the impact when designing 2D animations?

(2) They also said Corona have been working on mesh rendering support, is it still in the plan?

I just typed “what is mesh rendering” into google.

well, I did google before I asked, but I just didn’t get the true meaning of mesh rendering in such a 2D animation tool:

I just hope someone could help to explain a bit since I am new to 2D/3D animations. It seems a 3D concept that is used in 2D.

Beyond Graphics 2.0 2.5D support, I’ve not heard anything specific about mesh support.
