Who else is using Corona in the classroom?

Thought I would get the ball rolling by asking who else is using Corona in the classroom?

This will be the second year of my using Corona in the classroom. I started teaching it Fall of 2010 as an addition to the iOS material I was covering in my college Junior level mobile computing class. It was a huge success. My students loved it with several of their final projects submitted using Corona.

Last year I included Corona as kind of a ‘value-added’ portion… i.e. show up on Friday for this 8AM class, and I’ll show you how to use Corona to make a game. My attendance was better on Friday than any other day of the week.
My plan for this academic year is that instead of the class being 63% iOS, 33% Corona, that it will be 20% iOS and 80% Corona.

I am now finishing writing a textbook on using mobile app development using Corona, since there weren’t any other books (let alone a textbook) on the topic. If you’re interested in seeing it, drop me a line and I’ll get you a copy.

The only thing I would like to see different is a better mechanism for deploying Corona in a lab setting. I found it difficult to deploy and maintain in an environment where the machines were regularly re-built and the login was through a domain setup. Hey there,

I can tell you that rambling.teacher (I think that’s his Corona name) is using it; I spoke to his class last month

Here’s his blog.

Here’s his Twitter.

I’ve just taken the first steps with my Time Based Design students (all graphic designers - not used to any programming!) and they are responding very well. Since I the “programming animation” by relying on the excellent TweenMax library as a way ease them into AS3. I find that they have an easier time understanding functions and the transition.to API.

I’d love to see your book as I too desperately need a textbook for them, and my “cheatsheets” only get them so far. Jon Beebe’s excellent blog posts on various lua coding concepts have been wonderfully helpful! [import]uid: 5339 topic_id: 12840 reply_id: 47197[/import]

I would be happy to send you a review copy Andy. Send me an email: DrBurton ‘at’ BurtonsMediaGroup.com [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 12840 reply_id: 47204[/import]

I just started reading his? blog. Looks like they are doing some great things! (I also noted that you were the celebrity visitor! Way to go Peach!) [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 12840 reply_id: 47205[/import]

I will be using CoronaSDK in my class starting this fall. My class is Computer Programming (Mobile App/Game Development) at a Vo-Tech center for high school 11th & 12th graders in Jackson, Michigan (USA).

Starting in September, 100% of the students in our school will be using Corona SDK to learn basic game programming. It’s a pass/fail course and they’re not allowed to fail.

PS - “Our school” is my two kids who are homeschooled, so when I say “100% of the students” it’s not really as awesome as it sounds.

I’m teaching it currently in a course at Otis College of Art and Design.

The course is developing apps for mobile devices, and it is a ten week summer course. Most of my students have little to no programming experience and the class has been very successful to this point with only a couple of weeks left. [import]uid: 10903 topic_id: 12840 reply_id: 47262[/import]

Thanks - and thank you for not putting “celebrity” in quotes

The blog does make for a great read, they seemed a nice, smart bunch of kids, too  [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 12840 reply_id: 47277[/import]

I am running an after school club at a girls’ secondary school. My students are in years 8 to 12. I compete with all kinds of afterschool clubs for numbers but I have twenty odd enthusiastic students (the students aren’t odd it’s the number that’s imprecise!). I am no expert but I have had guidance from a few people in the Corona community. I hope to generate some more interest when I present about it at the next Victorian IT Teachers’ Association’s conference (late August).

I am particularly excited about the fact that textbooks are being written. This may make it possible to offer an actual course in programming with Corona for non-experts like me. It looks like your book will be the first to come out. I look forward to it.

I would love for Corona to be in my school! But sadly it isn’t… [import]uid: 7116 topic_id: 12840 reply_id: 47382[/import]
