why can't I build for Corona (""No valid XML data in response")

Hi,

I am still trying to determine if Corona is right for me. One thing I’m concerned about is reliance on the companies servers and internet to build, and I’ve tried doing a device build today to experiment with the process.

Unfortunately I have not been able to build at all. I’m am getting the following.

Q1 - What does this mean? Is it a server end issue?, internet/connectivity issue?, corona client bug?, error in my code?

Q2 - What should I do to be able to build? (to fix or work around)

Q3 - Is it any better for those who have subscribed? (or would it be the same). That is if I subscribed would the issue go away?
I note that I have the Corona client “Version 2011.704 (2011.12.8)”

2012-04-16 20:46:49.169 Corona Simulator[98379:2403] Connection error: (corona.build.4) ({ "/FaultCode" = "-65794"; "/FaultExtra" = { domain = "-1"; error = "-65795"; msg = "No valid XML data in response"; }; "/FaultString" = "/CFStreamFault"; "/kWSHTTPResponseMessage" = "<cfhttpmessageref> { simple response, url = http://developer.anscamobile.com/services/xmlrpc, body = 0 bytes }";<br> "/kWSResultIsFault" = 1;<br>})<br> [import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 324940[/import]

@greg886, I’ve been experiencing internet connectivity issue lately. I’ve seen connection error messages, some XML related errors, etc. on my terminal window, and what you posted look similar.

Due to the internet connectivity issue on my end, I’ve also seen the build process hang completely – meaning, nothing happens after the terminal displays Using Custom Build Id, as if the build process is still taking place, but it never ends. When this happens, I actually need to close the terminal window and boot myself out of Corona Simulator.

When build process fails like this, I would attempt building again later, and it eventually goes through.

I’m a subscriber, and it is definitely a problem on my end (because, when my internet connectivity is shaky, even the google.com wouldn’t load sometimes.)

Not sure if your issue is exactly the same, but I thought I’d share what I’ve been experiencing lately.

The error looks like a local connectivity problem to me. I’ve been building regularly for months and the only times I can recall getting a similar error has been when my connection has been dodgy - it has always resolved itself.

I agree that I’d prefer to be able to build locally but it’s not possible - no doubt for good technical reasons. [import]uid: 95579 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101337[/import]

Tried again this morning - anyone from Corona able to comment? Some notes:

* My internet connection (ADSL2) works fine (multiple devices in house uses it ok). Only very slight/minor thing I’ve noticed is on stackoverflow sometimes the ajax based calls can sometimes timeout. A normal user in the house doesn’t notice any issues.

* speedtest for my connection: ping=70ms, down=4.76Mbps, Up=0.4Mbps

* ping’ing what seems to be the IP address for corona (from wireshark capture) seems ok:

* What test could I run to simulate the connectivity requirement between my MacBook Pro and Corona servers? e.g. command prompt or a separate tool or otherwise? Is there something other than the Corona client itself (which is having an issue) I could use to try to simulate the connectivity issue?

Hey Greg,

Have you ever successfully built using Corona before? If so, has anything changed since that time?

I’ve seen this issue come up in the past and often it appears to be related to either not having agreed to the terms and conditions (though you should get a prompt warning you as much) or having changed your email/password.

Please let me know if any of this might be the case.

Thanks,
Peach  [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101449[/import]

Hi Peach,

I have built in the past a few days back. I do remember it was a little hit and miss with sometimes it working and sometimes not.

I don’t think I’ve changed login, but a few days back I did see something that made me think there was a newer version. I downloaded Corona again and installed over the top. I think I may have actually just re-installed the same version, so not sure if this might have made a difference?

I’m on currently on: Version 2011.704 (2011.12.8)

[Not sure if this means as a trial user I’m actually months behind?]

[import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101457[/import]

PS. Peach - should I try a full uninstall of Corona then reinstall? If yes, is there a recommended approach re how to fully uninstall? [import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101486[/import]

PSS. Tried again now & the build did go through…(did get a warning but at least I can address this now)…will let you know how I go over the next 24 hours… [import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101527[/import]

unfortunately even subsequent build had the same error again :frowning:

did about 5 build attempts across a few sample projects - only the first one worked - I did try the project again that built the first time and it had the error subsequently… [import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101531[/import]

Sorry Greg, time difference means sometimes we get a little lag between posts

So you built once and it worked then started failing again.

What OS are you running currently?

I’m a little confused by the fact it was working then you got errors again, even going back to the first project.

If the only thing you changed was the uninstall and reinstall it may be worth deauthorizing, deleting fully and reinstalling.

Do:

  • Make sure Corona is deauthorized
  • Quit Corona
  • Delete Corona
  • Go to users/library/preferences and delete files starting with com.anscamobile (normally up to three of them)
  • Reinstall Corona
  • Relaunch Corona
  • Authorize
  • Try to build

This may or may not solve the problem but as the only thing that seems to have changed for you was the new build it certainly doesn’t hurt to give this a go.

Also 704A is the newest version available to trial users. (Only difference between that and 704 is new iPad/3 compatibility IIRC.) [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101540[/import]

Hi Peach,

yes - seems intermittent but working only about 10% of the time

OS is Mac OS X 10.7.3 (11D50b)

re re-installing - will try this this evening

re 704A build - actually this is the one I thought I downloaded to re-install, however I don’t see the “A” in the current version number in the client when I go about corona…
Also the fact that the error message packaged up in the response is: “No valid XML data in response” - just wondering:
a) is this a server side error message, or client side error message
b) if it’s a server side error message doesn’t this imply it’s the server that didn’t send a valid html response to the client? i.e. it’s not really a connectivity issue, as the client got the XML payload from the server, it’s just case the XML payload [import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101543[/import]

re re-installing - tried this but unfortunately didn’t help - so re questions:

Q1 - Also the fact that the error message packaged up in the response is: “No valid XML data in response” - just wondering:
a) is this a server side error message, or client side error message
b) if it’s a server side error message doesn’t this imply it’s the server that didn’t send a valid html response to the client? i.e. it’s not really a connectivity issue, as the client got the XML payload from the server, it’s just case the XML payload

Q2 - Any chance it might be a caching issue at an intermediate point (e.g. ISP) perhaps? just clutching at straws

Q3 - Can you check logs at your end re my build attempts?

[import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101569[/import]

Hey Greg,

Honestly this isn’t the kind of thing I normally deal with (well, I do, but only when it’s caused by things I know - like a changed name, terms, etc.) so I’m not able to answer all your questions with confidence.

I’m going to pass this on and see if someone will a little more experience with this kind of thing might be able to better assist you.

Hang tight. [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101587[/import]

Dear Peach,

I am experiencing the same problem since yesterday with one of my app (i’ve already published 6 apps without problem). I followed your procedure, and downloaded the latest daily build.

If it helps, my configuration is :

Mac Os X v.10.6.8
Corona : Version 2012.783 (2012.12.8)
XCode : 4.2 / Build 4C199

Thanks,
Best regards,
Jérôme. [import]uid: 96703 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101779[/import]

Hey Jérôme,

I’ve passed this on today and am hoping someone will be able to respond here soon with some more info and a solution shortly.

I appreciate you posting with your setup, hopefully it will prove useful.

Will bring this up with others in the AM and see if we can find an answer ASAP.

Peach  [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101809[/import]

thanks - let us know if you need more trace info…

just noting a weird issue a very small percentage of people were having with Evernote, and it turned out to be the caching strategy one large Internet Service Provider was applying (or something to that effect) after which they looked into it after Evernote raised the issue with them…
[import]uid: 140210 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101817[/import]

@greg886, I just reset your account so you be prompted to sign in again when you start Corona. I’m not sure if that will help the problem, but it will eliminate any issues with your account on the server side.

The message you are receiving is because of a communication error with the server and that is the server response. It’s not something that users see unless something is not working right.

I’m assuming you are getting this message during a build process? Have you tried building one of the sample projects shipped with Corona? Try build both Android and iOS and see if you are getting the same error.

My other question is where are you located? We had some problems in the past in some countries where the IP address of the user’s account would change every few minutes, which would cause something like this to happen. The build would start off with one IP address and then it changed within the build process and the server aborted the build because it didn’t recognize the IP.

Yesterday we did have some problems with the Corona server but that was only for a short time, so I don’t think that’s your problem.

Edit: Are you using an internet proxy? Is it possible to try at another location (with a different ISP) to see if it’s an Internet problem? [import]uid: 7559 topic_id: 24940 reply_id: 101871[/import]

Dear Tom,

Thank for your answer. I still have the same issue.

  1. Corona did not ask me to sign in as you said, so I did a desauthorize / quit then sign-in again.
  2. I tried to build my app -> fail / same error
  3. I tried with an other app (one of mine already published on app store) and the build is successful
  4. I tried again my app (still for iOs, with the same Provisioning profile) -> fail
  5. I leave in the south of France, no Internet Proxy ; I will try another location tomorrow.

Tell me if you want me to run further investigations.

Best,
Jérôme.

Hi Tom,

Re - I’m assuming you are getting this message during a build process? => YES

Re - Have you tried building one of the sample projects shipped with Corona? => YES have tried a few different projects

Re - Where am I => in Australia - Internet Service Provider is TPG (www.tpg.com.au).

RE - Proxy - I’m going through a linux based firewall here, is setup to be transparent proxy but no filtering or anything - no need for me to put any proxy details in browsers or anything (of course TPG are probably proxying traffic I guess)

**OK - Here’s the interesting thing. Tried Android builds. I just did (and repeated again to be sure) a build of RottenApples on both Android and IOS, Results +>

* Android build - WORKS EACH TIME
* IOS build - FAILS EACH TIME**

Hopefully this assists in narrowing things down. Anything else I can do to gather more info?

Cheers
Greg

Update from earlier today:

* Android Build - Works each time

* IOS Build - Actually have 2 out of 5 build attempts that works, however of course it is very frustrating that you can’t rely on it working… When it fails same issues per original post
