Will CoronaSDK support Metal (iOS) ?

Will CoronaSDK support Metal for iOS devices?

How about using some library like this to transform OpenGL to MetalGL: https://metalgl.com/

It looks like Cocos2d plans to support Metal. (reference: http://discuss.cocos2d-x.org/t/plans-for-metal-support/22336/3 )

How about Corona? What’s your plan to support Metal?

I think I’ve read elsewhere that they don’t plan on supporting metal. It’s a load of extra work and it only benefits iOS. Corona’s big thing is cross platform, not just iOS.

The performance of Metal is impressive.

About 1 or 2 years ago, when CoronaSDK upgraded to a new version of OpenGL, I found my app’s performance had a big jump (much more smooth). I didn’t know it could make so much difference when Corona made some fundamental changes.

Corona should support Metal proactively. That will be another big jump in performance. Good for the developers, and good for Corona.

Crossing platform will be less and less important (many alternatives or going native). It’s the whole package that developers choose Corona. If Corona cannot catch up with the speed of Apple’s development, it will be left behind, especially for such an important feature.

@Corona

If Metal support is not going to happen no matter what, let us know in advance.

Metal is definitely not cross-platform. I’ve not heard any discussion on supporting this. Now that we are part of Perk.com, I don’t want to say never though I doubt this conversation has happened.

I will say we have a large list of things we have to do first.

@Rob

Sure, thanks for update.

I didn’t mean Metal is cross-platform. roballison182 mentioned it because he thinks Corona’s “big thing” is cross-platform so he thinks Corona might not support Metal because it only benefits iOS.

I just mentioned it because I think except cross-platform there are many other things to make Corona the best choice. Just like you said, you have a large of things you want to do.

But Metal is definitely a huge thing for iOS part.
