[WIP] It's Not Rocket Science

In my spare time, outside of Glitch, I’ve been chipping away at a small helper library for Corona called Puggle.

Puggle’s goal is to simplify and reduce the common features in our games so to speed up development.

I will be releasing it in the future as a plugin on the marketplace, however, it’s not as feature-complete as I’d hope currently, and I want to put it through some testing.

I figured the best way to both add the required features and test it would be to produce some games using it, the first being It’s Not Rocket Science.

The game itself is purposefully simple and similar to a previous game I’ve made. It’s currently in private alpha testing ( a fancy term for “guilting my wife into testing it” ), and I hope to release it as a beta soon. If you’re interested in giving it a whirl please let me know!

Puggle sounds intriguing.  Look forward to seeing it.

I’m guessing from the pics that ‘Rocket Science’ is based on Red Rossum (which I still enjoy playing when I have a few minutes spare).

I’m interesting in Beta Testing! That looks excellent - I love the simple, straightforward games.

I’ve used several GG libraries over the years so you can definitely count on my support when you release the Puggle plugin.

Yea it’s basically Red Rossum 2.0, a bit of a copout sure but I just want to release some stuff to test Puggle and I figured it was a good way to start.

That’s great thanks! I hope to release the Beta on Google Play soon, still trying to sort out my iOS dev account ( getting some weird issue so I’ve contacted Apple support about it ). I’ll also have an OSX build on itch.io if that’s more your thing? I don’t have a Windows machine setup yet so can’t do a Windows build sadly.

Thank you! Part of the idea of Puggle is to take a lot of the functionality of all the various GG libs and turn it into a single plugin, however, written better ( in theory ) and simpler to use.

I’ve just uploaded a build for public beta testing in Google Play. We’ve never used the public beta stuff at Glitch so this will be another experiment ( only luckily through just my name, don’t want to sully the Glitch name with my silly prototypes  ), not fully sure how it works but in theory you can sign up for the build here - https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.grahamranson.itsnotrocketscience

I’ve also put up an OSX version here - https://grahamranson.itch.io/its-not-rocket-science

Hi Graham,

I’m Alain. I’ve downloaded your app from Google Play and I’ve played for a while (I’m the best scorer !  )

I will send you soon by email my remarks.

Very nice game !

Hi Alain, thank you very much!

Looking forward to your feedback however I fully understand the game is basic :) . Mainly just a testing ground for puggle

For anyone that’s playing along at home, I’ve just uploaded a new build, here’s the changelist:

Rocket selection changed to make it clearer
Increased the minimum speed of the largest asteroids
Pickup name is now always visible, it’s also smaller, central, and in uppercase
Rocket is now centred vertically
Fuel pickups now have a higher probability of showing when low on fuel
Some rockets now have a radar system to warn of nearby asteroids
Improved performance
Wormhole pickups now have timers
Altitude is now shown in the sharing screenshot
Misc fixes

I made a quick trailer for the game however I am less than useless when it comes to video editing, so I decided to do it all in-game instead.

Nice.  I really like the video

Just out of interest, how did you record the app?

If you have a mac you can record HD strait to QuickTime from an iOS device via USB.  It’s super easy and what I use for my video demos.  You can also record it to Xcode (also mac).

Thanks!

I recorded it on my Mac in the simulator using Screenflick - http://www.araelium.com/screenflick - it’s really easy to use, even for a video novice like myself

Very good game:) Just awesome.

Thanks!
