Words With Monsters - Terrorise a village of innocent monsters

SH is a valid word in Scrabble.

wpetzler,

Just curious, how do you check words?  Do you have a word list in the app?  Are there freely available word lists out there?

My next app is going to be an educational word game, and I hadn’t started researching that, so curious if you have any pointers.

I took TLNLJKLYE3T3, game looks fantastics, congrats!

I have a word list, broken up into separate files or 2, 3, 4 letter word etc. Each in a prefix tree structure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trie).

Each word in my list also has a ‘frequency’ value, which is an approximation of how often the word is used in common English. Adding that in made the monsters seem MUCH more lifelike, but had the hilarious side-effect of making them use swear words surprisingly often.

So I also have a separate list of profanities for the monsters to avoid (users can still play them).

There are lots of lists out there. What you want will depend on the needs of your app (word length, profanities, use of hyphens and apostrophes etc)

For word definitions WordNet is great. Free and with really nicely written definitions. Not 100% comprehensive though.

Wow, you really went all out for that.  Very cool.  Love that the monsters started swearing.  There should be an adult version of the app for that!

Thanks so much for providing the links.  Appreciate it.
