Words With Monsters - Terrorise a village of innocent monsters

Hey guys,

I’ve just released my first solo game - Words With Monsters.

Words With Monsters is a word game with role playing game elements. Battle monsters with your words and spend their money on shiny hats.

You play the role of Sir Wordsworth, a sociopathic knight with delusions of intelligence. Armed with a wooden sword and a bucket for a helmet you’ll take on the ‘evil’ monsters of the land with your verbal prowess.

Thanks thegdog - fixed the screenshots.

Played the game a bit this weekend.  It is fun.  And yes, it is cute.  Very nice work!

looks nice

just played it. nice game, there may be an issue with your word checking routine, i play the word ‘have’ the monster played ‘mars’ but his ‘s’ landed next to my ‘h’ making ‘sh’ which isn’t a word

Yeah it doesn’t sound like a word to me either, but it’s the dictionary so what can you do.

I originally had a little word definition lookup feature to combat this exact scenario (It happens a lot). But I took it out because the only free definition database I could find is missing a lot of words. So it actually made the problem worse.

It’s a shame, because I found myself using it all the time.

SH is a valid word in Scrabble.

wpetzler,

Just curious, how do you check words?  Do you have a word list in the app?  Are there freely available word lists out there?

My next app is going to be an educational word game, and I hadn’t started researching that, so curious if you have any pointers.

I took TLNLJKLYE3T3, game looks fantastics, congrats!

I have a word list, broken up into separate files or 2, 3, 4 letter word etc. Each in a prefix tree structure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trie).

Each word in my list also has a ‘frequency’ value, which is an approximation of how often the word is used in common English. Adding that in made the monsters seem MUCH more lifelike, but had the hilarious side-effect of making them use swear words surprisingly often.

So I also have a separate list of profanities for the monsters to avoid (users can still play them).

There are lots of lists out there. What you want will depend on the needs of your app (word length, profanities, use of hyphens and apostrophes etc)

For word definitions WordNet is great. Free and with really nicely written definitions. Not 100% comprehensive though.

Wow, you really went all out for that.  Very cool.  Love that the monsters started swearing.  There should be an adult version of the app for that!

Thanks so much for providing the links.  Appreciate it.
