Would Corona ever do this to their users?

Well said jonbeebe!

What I was thinking would be a really good resource for some of the GS converts who prehaps don’t understand as well as some of us, would be to have a Corona example for everything in GameSalad. For example, Interpolate, Rules, etc…

Being a rather successful GS to Corona convert, do you have any you could provide that replaced your GS counterpart “code”? :slight_smile:

Thanks red!

I was thinking of doing that and posting it to my Corona tutorials resource (CoronaSDK.com) that I recently started, but I wouldn’t be able to cover all the GS concepts as I didn’t use everything in GS.

I converted my entire game, Doodle Dash to Corona, changed out a lot of graphics and even added onto it a whole lot (and it got a HUGE performance boost after switching to Corona despite ADDING onto the game) so I managed to “convert” everything so it’s quite a bit to go over.

I am VERY open to any questions though, so if you have any specific “GS to Corona” questions I’ll be happy to answer that way. You can also email me at jb.11xi8t [at] gmail.com directly if you need to.

As far as “Interpolate” goes, it is AKA transition.to in Corona. Here’s the doc page on transition.to (it is A LOT more effective than the GS version to with the “easing” library).

And for those interested, I dug up YouTube videos on my GameSalad version of Doodle Dash (1.0) and my Corona-made version (1.1 and up).

Below is Doodle Dash! made with GameSalad (Doodle Dash! v1.0):

And here it is after I converted it to Corona (The video below is Doodle Dash! 1.1 but it is currently at version 1.3 which is obviously much better):

The major differences:

  • GameSalad version is VERY jittery and hard to control. The accelerometer controls are very stiff and often unresponsive… also the game was quite laggy despite apply as many graphics/gamesalad optimzations (and sacrifices) as I could find.

  • The Corona-made version is not only smoother, has very comfortable controls, and has MANY more graphics resources onscreen at once… there is also OpenFeint leaderboards and Facebook posting.

  • The version of Doodle Dash! that’s out NOW has a halloween theme and options page where you can switch themes, play as Girl Dash, etc. – Lots of things that would have made the GameSalad version probably un-playable but didn’t affect performance negatively in the Corona version. In fact, the latest version (out now) has much better performance than the version you saw in the video because of changes I made to the code.

WOW… I am stunned from watching those two videos… the performance increase is ridiculous… It is amazing to see how much better that makes your game!

I’ve already started using the transition.to with easing, it works really nicely, whereas on GS I always found synchronized movement to vary between assets.

In Doodle Dash, if you don’t mind me asking, how did you set up the items to spawn? Simply timers and random x positions?

@red
I was thinking the same thing and it wouldn’t need to be really involved just enough to help exGSer’s get their feet wet [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2620 reply_id: 7942[/import]

I just want to introduce myself, Mike from Las Vegas, (the new detroit), I started using GS, made 5 games, it was fun but I need more tools to use to make games, at first (I am not a coder) it was the only answer for me, I was too chicken to try and code. I have had Corona for 3 days, have made two modest little apps and am getting the hang of it. I would love a graphical interface like Game Salad that would give me a door to lower level code if I wanted to go there, but it is what it is. But now I have a debugger, and I see it on the simulator instantly, and I can offer the code on more than one platform.

Most of all, I have had communication with the Ansca staff, if nothing else is positive from my journey to add a new tool that one bright beacon of light is actually blinding, real people who actually respond, my thanks go out to the staff, great job.

I will probably be bugging you non beginners for help, and I promise to ask the dumbest questions possible, at least for a while.

Nice to be here.

Hey Everybody! I’m a fellow GS convert as well. Just bought in this evening!!!
For those of you from the GS forums I’m Jweaver911. I decided to go with my current Freelance trade name here.

Anyway, I’m super excited to be unshackled by all the trappings of GS. And I want to just say I’m already impressed at the level of communication both here on the boards and from the staff themselves. BRAVO!

I would also like to say nice work to JonBeebe and also thanks for the encouragement!

@Josh: Thanks for the compliment! My account info says I’ve been a member for “12 weeks 2 days” and it’s been a great run so far… I’m just getting started and I can’t wait to see what all the newer members come up with. Welcome aboard :slight_smile: [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 2620 reply_id: 8526[/import]

@jstrahan I’m glad too. From hearing you and all the others, I’m quite regretful I didn’t make the jump sooner. I was teetering a while back. Can’t wait to get my feet wet.

@jonbeebe That’s pretty impressive for such a short time :wink: [import]uid: 10361 topic_id: 2620 reply_id: 8527[/import]
