Would you recommend installing Corona on a virtual machine?

Hello everyone, I hope I am posting this in the right section as it does not really fit into the other categories. I am in the process of upgrading my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1501 with an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-50 processor, to 4GB of RAM. I know it is an older laptop but I am a fan of Linux and Ubuntu runs great on it! I plan on installing Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot” as my primary operating system when it is released in about a week. Since Corona is only supported by Windows and MAC, I am going to install Windows XP in a virtual machine for Corona. My question is, would you recommend this setup? Or would it be better for me to simply dual boot to take full advantage of Corona? I’m not sure how much memory Corona uses when running, so I’m looking for the best setup for Corona to work properly. If anyone could give me some advice it would be much appreciated, thanks for you time.

P.S. If you need anymore specifications on my system please let me know [import]uid: 73438 topic_id: 16029 reply_id: 316029[/import]

I think it should work if you spend at least 1GB RAM to the VM

Most important seems for me the HW accelerated OpenGL - else I wouldn’t await real fun in the simulator, but builds should work anyway.

As far as VMware and VirtualBox support this HW-OpenGL for XP as guest, it should work “usable”.

So please try and tell what happened.

I’ve switched Win/Linux a year ago - caused of music software and low latency needed, I use Windows as host - and my private/business world is in the Linux VM - I can’t check it.

I watched the memory usage of Corona Simulator and also the build process. It was going from 16 to 55MB not 380MB like FireFox at the same time

Maybe you need a little bit more with bigger projects, but that shouldn’t be the problem. [import]uid: 70114 topic_id: 16029 reply_id: 59494[/import]

For actually running games/apps in the simulator, I would really suggest dual-booting instead of running inside a VM. Even with plenty of RAM, the graphics adapter is still emulated (at least with virtualbox it is) so it’s difficult to get anything running smoothly.

On the other hand, if you just want to build within a VM, that’s not a problem. I run Corona on Windows, but when I need to test/build for iOS I can just do it all within a VM. It takes forever (aside from the corona build, which is done on their servers anyway) but works. [import]uid: 49447 topic_id: 16029 reply_id: 59501[/import]

Thanks for all the replies. I was planning on using VirtualBox so I am glad it supports HW-OpenGL for XP. That is pretty surprising, who would have thought Firefox would use more memory than an iPhone simulator?! Now that may be a problem, being that my laptop is older with not the best of graphics card. I am still leaning towards VM right now but I will post my results when I get everything up and running in case someone is in a similar situation. I only wanted to create a VM because I do most everything in Linux, while every once in awhile, I have to use Windows. I would rather use a VM than carve out a 20GB partition or so for occasional use. Again, thanks for all the replies. [import]uid: 73438 topic_id: 16029 reply_id: 59541[/import]
