Hey guys,
It’s been awhile since I last was active on the forums and with Corona. With High School and everything else exploding, I couldn’t find any time to work on my beloved apps, but its half way through the summer and I’m more then ready to start again!
I need your opinions (good or bad) on these icons for my soon to be released app. Any ideas, changes, and POSITIVE reinforcements will be gladly takin.
I know the “Lite” text is a little obnoxious, but I couldn’t really find anything else that would work. Thanks everyone!

Hey Khaodik,
So, first impression I like your icons. the style/theme you picked are cool, and the overall finish level is high quality.
As for the Lite thing, Have you considered changing the grey border? if you will check some diet/lite products out there (not in the mobile market but in the super market) you will notice, that the diet product are always lighter in color, a lot less eye catching. for instance: Coke/diet Coke, Marlboro and Marlboro Lite etc. I like that approach even though your lite and their “lite/diet” is not the same, I think it still translates well to our domain.
So to sum it up:
Consider using two different border colors.
As for the Free font and style, I think it’s not bad how you did it. the size is good for the lower res devices and you can still see and understand the overall theme, maybe you should consider moving that arm with the slingshot (in both icons) so it’ll be better seen in both.
Overall I think you did a very good job, I hope this helps

I think you may have too much detail and too little contrast between the character’s face and the background, but the best way to know for sure is to try the icon in different sizes from 16 px to the largest. If it just becomes a messy blob of color in the smaller sizes you know you have a problem

I think gury’s suggestion RE color is fascinating and very clever. I have never personally considered that before.
I would agree though that there may be a little too much detail for a small icon - I always check how clear they are at 57x57 before making a call on that, though.
Either way, love the style!

Thank you for the critique, I think its important to not only have your own opinion of what looks the “best” in your app, but of others as well. And I appreciate the improvements very much! Gury, thank you for the comment that the finish looks “high quality”, because its all but “high quality” haha :). I tried to change the color of the border, but gray is honestly the only color that fits the best without it looking too obtrusive. CluelessIdeas, I don’t feel like detail is too much of a problem in this icon, because in my opinion I don’t think it looks terrible at 57x57 icon size, but please tell me if you disagree. As with the contrast with the background and the skin color, I lowered the contrast and exposure of the background and added a little gaussian blur to set the focus to the character. Thank you Peach, If you feel like there is still too much detail in the small icon, please let me know, I have no problem changing it :). Anyways, Thank you guys very much for your time!

I think with the blur that actually looks pretty good at 512 and at 57 - the image is not too “hard”, basically. I could tell what I was looking at (except the slingshot) while scrolling down a list at a normal speed in the store.

Looks very good IMHO.
All this 512 to 57 pixels talk reminded me of Pixel Fitting.
When you scale down with a regular image editing software you get its auto algos to do some anti aliasing for you, usually the results will be ok, but the curves / circles / fonts within the icon will have auto anti-alias problems (some become pixelated for instance) , check out the following link that explains it better:

tl;dr : you can manually edit your scaled down icons to make it better looking. (one by one, tedious)

Thanks Peach! And Gury thank you, I have to keep Pixel Fitting in mind. Also, if you guys have some spare time I would really appreciate getting your opinions in the game itself. I’m beta testing right now and could use your help. Here’s a link to the thread.

P.s. ignore the angry birds in the link, it was a joke that ended in failure haha.

I saw the “Angry Birds” comment and lol’d - I wouldn’t take it as a failure
I’ll sign up for beta if I find myself with some free time; best of luck either way, though! [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 28830 reply_id: 116420[/import]
