4-Hour Corona Game Jam (aka Corona Blitz) (1-8 April)

Update 2:

The date is set as 1-8 April and we’re off to theme selection! -> https://forums.coronalabs.com/topic/68107-game-jam-corona-blitz-theme-selection-1-8-april/

Update 1:

This is moving forward and here are our first rules:

  • You are NOT allowed to use “Remove Splash Screen” plugin so we can understand the game is developed in Corona.
  • Feel free to use any templates, assets or plugins(except “Remove Splash Screen”) you own but don’t forget to write those down to your game page. You can also use those if the licenses are appropriate.
  • You can submit as many games as you want! Make your first game in 4 hours then start another one if you like.

We are still talking about possible themes(or no theme), start-end period etc. Feel free to join the talk and contribute to decisions. Thank you.

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if you would like to participate if we organize a 4-hour game jam like the Corona Blitz some years ago.

  • 4-hour game jam so you don’t need to allocate your days or wait for stars to align
  • No fixed time so you are free to spend your 4 hours of jamming whenever you like in a one week period
  • Greater sense of starting something new - maybe a prototype for your next hit?
  • Jamming with Corona community

Looking forward to your votes and replies.

I think this is a great idea.

Rob

Yeah… I’d be down for something like that.

5 votes so far. Not great but it’s something, right?

By the way, if you all could share your preferred timeframe with us that would really help us determine the dates for the jam.

I’m down. :metal::smile::metal:

I know this got posted to a couple of outside channels. Maybe this will be a good candidate for the biweekly From the Forum post which would also cause it to go out in next week’s newsletter and get shared out to Facebook and Twitter as well.

Rob

Itch.io makes it easy to host Jams, BTW…

https://itch.io/docs/creators/game-jams

Sure thing.

Four hours is a bit long for you, @roaminggamer. I’ll be expecting three or four entries

Thank you for your suggestions @no2games. I was also thinking about using itch.io. It’s pretty easy to handle and far more reliable than hosting on a custom page.

@nick_sherman, I guess our first rule is here: Submit as many games as you want!

@Rob Miracle, are you aware of any other pages/channels out there that we can create some buzz and maybe attract some non-Corona developers to the jam? There is a chance that other Lua developers(Gideros, LÖVE, Marmalade etc.) might also be interested.

While this is just in the “gauging interest” phase, I can’t do much more than drop it in a few social channels. It’s going to be the lead item in tomorrows From the Forum’s post, which will get shared out to our social media channels. It will also be in the newsletter next Thursday since the FTF posts get added to that newsletter.

Now once you have something firm: Date Range, itch.io page setup, theme, rules, etc., then I would consider a dedicated blog post for it and a more prominent location in the newsletter.

Rob

That’s great! I’ll try to setup everything this weekend. Hopefully, next week we can start talking about the theme.

I like it!  What are the rules?  How much can you bring to the table.  I assume I can bring my own codebase shortcuts and of course Ed’s SSK?  What about art and other assets?

Great idea, count me in!

I’m down too, now are we thinking theme or no theme?

Edit: for a 4hr hour jam maybe a free-for-all, make a thing would be better

@sharp100, since I won’t be asking for source code or anything, I guess there is no point in introducing additional rules for plugins, tools or assets. Actually, it might be a good idea to encourage tools like SSK to make games come to life faster in 4 hours time. Only strict rule is that noone is allowed to use their “Remove Splash Screen” plugin so we can understand that the game is developed in Corona.

@simon.natt, I was thinking about some possible themes but if the majority thinks no-theme is better for this event, we can go that way.

@bgmadclown I am not for or against a theme, would make it more interesting for sure seeing what ppl come up with. Maybe another vote with some possible options could solve this?

Just seen your ‘next week’ post

Depending on when you do this, remember that we do have a Marketplace contest going now for small-simple but complete project games. It might be worth me trying to extend the date around this since March 24 is coming upon us quickly.

Rob

@simon.natt:smiley: I’m thinking about starting another poll with possible themes with an option of “No theme”. In the meantime, you can suggest themes of your own so I can include them in the poll.

@Rob Miracle, do you suggest we plan the jam before March 24 and encourage people to submit templates or start the blitz after the contest ends?

By the way, I’m editing the first post so more people are informed about the latest updates.

I vote for after the contest.  I want to enter some templates in the contest, but its already looking like a challenge to do so.  Having a jam in there will make it harder.  As well, I don’t think a 4-hour jam game will be good enough for a template, but that is just me.

For someone who has never done anything like this… can someone give me the 101 version?
