4-Hour Corona Game Jam (aka Corona Blitz) (1-8 April)

That’s great! I’ll try to setup everything this weekend. Hopefully, next week we can start talking about the theme.

I like it!  What are the rules?  How much can you bring to the table.  I assume I can bring my own codebase shortcuts and of course Ed’s SSK?  What about art and other assets?

Great idea, count me in!

I’m down too, now are we thinking theme or no theme?

Edit: for a 4hr hour jam maybe a free-for-all, make a thing would be better

@sharp100, since I won’t be asking for source code or anything, I guess there is no point in introducing additional rules for plugins, tools or assets. Actually, it might be a good idea to encourage tools like SSK to make games come to life faster in 4 hours time. Only strict rule is that noone is allowed to use their “Remove Splash Screen” plugin so we can understand that the game is developed in Corona.

@simon.natt, I was thinking about some possible themes but if the majority thinks no-theme is better for this event, we can go that way.

@bgmadclown I am not for or against a theme, would make it more interesting for sure seeing what ppl come up with. Maybe another vote with some possible options could solve this?

Just seen your ‘next week’ post

Depending on when you do this, remember that we do have a Marketplace contest going now for small-simple but complete project games. It might be worth me trying to extend the date around this since March 24 is coming upon us quickly.

@simon.natt:smiley: I’m thinking about starting another poll with possible themes with an option of “No theme”. In the meantime, you can suggest themes of your own so I can include them in the poll.

@Rob Miracle, do you suggest we plan the jam before March 24 and encourage people to submit templates or start the blitz after the contest ends?

By the way, I’m editing the first post so more people are informed about the latest updates.

I vote for after the contest.  I want to enter some templates in the contest, but its already looking like a challenge to do so.  Having a jam in there will make it harder.  As well, I don’t think a 4-hour jam game will be good enough for a template, but that is just me.

For someone who has never done anything like this… can someone give me the 101 version?

No my suggestion was to try and extend the marketplace contest to allow jam entries to be included, but as @roaminggamer pointed out, a four hour project isn’t likely going to be a good submission.

When planning this, please keep in mind that Ludum Dare 38 is April 21-24. So you probably want to avoid that weekend if possible.

Rob

@adrianm, this is no different than any other game jam. We’ll find out some themes like “olympics” and you’ll make a game about “olympics” in the jam period. It doesn’t necessarily needs to be about any olympic game but somehow, you need to connect it to the theme. You can even make a game about two people talking about olympics and our choices will affect how the conversation goes.

In Corona Blitz , you’ll have only 4 hours to create that game but have a 1 week period which means you can only spend 4 hours making one of your games but you are free to use your time in that 1 week span. Let’s say you only have 1 hour that you can spend daily on that game which means you can make it in 4 days, spending 1 hour each day.

@Rob Miracle, thanks for the heads up. Is there any other important / well known event that will get in our way? I am thinking about 1 April - 8 April period by the way.

@Everyone, here are some of the topics I’m thinking about for the jam. I will open another poll for that after getting your suggestions.

  • Robotics
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Jokes
  • Civil / Digital Rights
  • No theme / Free for All

@everyone, how about we start the Blitz on April 1st and end it on April 8th?

Works for me.

I will give this a go, I have never participated in a game-jam before, so am looking forward to it.

I can do that.

Count me in.

If it involves city building I’ve got this… otherwise I have no libraries, assets or anything else so am somewhat at a disadvantage.

Great! I’ve just started the “topic selection” topic and you’re all invited!!

@adrianm, don’t worry. I’ll also probably go in with just circles and rectangles.
