The Story of Pyramid Jumble

It’s been a 2-year journey to get my first mobile and Corona-based game out the door. I got really inspired by Joe Kaufman and his Lost City and said to myself “Man, I could make that game no problem!”.

So I woke up one night with a brilliant idea for a similar adventure game, wrote a story, create a prototype and got a art director friend on board to make the game. It soon became clear that it is A LOT of work to make a game like this, even as we tried to scope it down to it’s bare minimum, we realised it would take 4-5 years to make this ourselves part time. So we decided to scope it down further to its essentials with a much smaller premise but that fell apart too. During this process I learned Corona quite well and could easily prototype most of what we wanted to do within a day but it just wasn’t enough. So we gave up.

I created a few experiments in my spare time and last summer my brother came up with this simple word game idea that sounded very doable. After seeing my mother playing Words in a Pic which was a terribly designed game we had to make this so she could play something better!

So I spent most of last years’ christmas holidays coding away at this game and we iterated over about 6 months to create a solid minimalistic prototype of the gameplay seen above, all in our spare time. And now another 6 months and we have polished it, playtested it with about 10 people from friends and family in 3-4 rounds before everything was good enough for a public release. And now we’re finally done!

I have about 15 years of experience with programming in a wide variety of languages and environments so Corona was awesome to just dig around in and just create new stuff and ideas daily. It’s almost like a prototype tool that you can create real things in with impressive speed without having to worry about a lot of the headaches that comes with native programming in either environment. And you create it for all platforms at once which is just awesome.

So thanks for making this SDK available for us with little time to spare so we can make games for real, for everyone.

And thanks family and friends for helping me make this game possible.

Congrats! Downloading now to try it out

Edit: really well made and polished app. I left you a nice review from the Irish google play store.

Ps: your banner add is overlapping your settings screen when it slides out, and another graphic is covering up some text on the lower left of the settings screen.

Somw spelling mistakes in the English language, for instance “Ireland” was spely incorrectly as “Irland”.

They are the only issues i have found.

Wow thanks for going the extra mile!

I’ll note the issues for the next update. Again, really appreciate it!

Edit: Btw are you in any way related to this Gremlin? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gremlin_Interactive. Would be cool

No problem, I’m at about half way completed within a period of about an hour. I’m fast

Very addictive game.

Regarding Gremlin, we are only related by continuing on the great name of the previous company and trying to keep to the high standards they set.

That is fast. Didn’t think anyone would beat it under 3 hours. Most people probably need 5 to 7. Great! If you like hopefully more people does as well.

OK I have very fond memories of Lotus, Motorhead and Fatal Racing especially which were listed on that page so I had to check. Also it mentions a revival of Super Cars. Can I ask, did I completely miss that one or did it never happen?

This is a very slick looking app – nice job!

Gremlin, I didn’t know you were Irish. Me too…

Thanks a lot Brian! Hope you’re enjoying it  Means much that people notice. It’s a lot more work than you think even for a relatively simple game like this to get this far as I’m sure you know

Heh, really? Neat, send me a PM

I found another issue, it’s somewhere in the car brands, (one of the deepest levels, 4th from bottom or something) it shows the title in Swedish, rather than English in that section. For some reason.

I’ll send a screenshot when i get time, if needed

There! I found it. So, no need! Thanks for pointing it out. Man you get blind after looking at it for so long… nice to have more people playing and finding the last things!

It’ll be included in the next update which now should fix everything everyone has found so far since the release. Can’t promise when it’ll arrive though. Should be within a week or two (got a full-time job alongside this).

Sweet  My Fiancee and I had a blast playing it together the other night.

re full time job, don’t we all  I hope the game does well for you, it’s the type of word game i love and it’s very well put together and polished.

btw, if your interested in trying out my first and only release (Puzzle Game), look here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gremlininteractive.puzzlejumper

It was released a couple of weeks ago, hasn’t taken off yet, but people seem to like it. Which is nice to hear.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday :>

So great to hear that you played it together like that, just what we wanted to achieve!

Oh I thought you worked at Gremlin full time. I guess not many of us expect to make a living solely on this yet.

I’d love to play your game as well. Ironically that would set me back more than I’ve made on my game so far :stuck_out_tongue: Good to hear people like it. It looks great on the screenshots.

It’s actually the last hours of my vacation now, I spent at least half of it finishing Pyramid Jumble but now its back to work tomorrow. So I’ll try to make the most of the final hours of this Sunday yes! And I hope you will enjoy the rest of yours as well!

I do work at Gremlin full time yeah (it’s my company) but we also do contract work, so i consider those full time jobs too, for the duration of the work…

I think it will be a while before we are making “living” money off apps however, as our portfolio is small. Finding the time to make our own apps is the most challenging aspect.

Thanks

Short update:

Pyramid Jumble has gotten several fix updates and is now version 1.0 for Android! Should be a breeze to play now

iOS version has come far and is almost ready for final testing before being submitted to App Store. Wish me luck

Congrats! Downloading now to try it out
