GIG Jam Warmup

** LAST UPDATED 30 APR 2013 **

To warm up for the upcoming GIG Jam (and for other reasons) I will be making 7 complete games in 7 days: http://roaminggamer.com/2013/04/22/7-games-in-7-days/

If you are going to be entering the GIGJam, join me in the warm up and make at least one game between now and then.  Better to find the flaws in your process now than on May 4th when the Jam starts!

Please watch next week’s Corona Geek (episode #37 if I can count) to see all seven games (at least briefly).

Game List and Statuses

  1. Magnetized Clone ( CODED ) - Similar to but not the same as the linked game.  Includes editor.
  2. Something Green  ( CODED ) - A Corona re-write of my old iT2D game ‘Something Blue’. Includes editor.
  3. Gravity Flipper  ( CODED ) - A gravity flipping block based game in the vein of ‘And Yet It Moves’ or '‘Freeze!’, just not as free-form.  Includes editor.
  4. Schmup  ( CODED ) - Gotta have at least one shoot-em up.  Mechanics TBD.  Includes editor. Has Bug! **  **
  5. Pinball  ( CODED ) - A simple pinball game.   Includes editor. Has small physics issue…**  **
  6. Line Follower ( CODED ) - A game using line following mechanics.
  7. 21 Hangman  ( INCOMPLETE ) - Blackjack meets hangman.

Update #1 (23 APR 2013)

Game #1 and #2 are done.

Question:  I am considering bundling all of the games in a single app.  What do you think?  Together or separate?

Update #2 (24 APR 2013)

Game #3 is done. Schmup next and I still need suggestions for game 7.

Note: I’ll start putting up videos of the current games Thursday or Friday at the latest.

Update #3 (29 APR 2013)

The games are done (well 6 anyways) and packaged in a single app.  I’m taking a little more time to feature test and bug test then I’ll publish them today. http://bit.ly/11x4Xza

Update #4 (30 APR 2013)

  1. You can get the games as a bundle for Android right now, and hopefully soon on iOS. Just search for 7G7D in the app store(s), or follow this link: http://bit.ly/17uykGo
  2. I was going to make these into templates, but for now I’m going to release the code on GumRoad for $0+: https://gumroad.com/l/tbZN

If you would still rather see these as templates, follow the directions in the GumRoad description.

Thanks!

Well that’s just crazy  I will certainly be following this

@GG No doubt! I thought the 1GAM crowd was extreme! So Ed is an Author, consultant, regular guest on the corona geek show, and is going to also create and publish 7 games in a week…  Talk about your over achiever

@roaminggamer

… and remember GIGJam48 is 48 hours to create one game… not the other way around!

This will be my first Jam, so I am doing a bit of research on the Ludum Dare site, to get pointers from the 'veteran  jammers.

I’m also doing a ‘boot camp’ every night to explore something I havn’t tried.  Last night was maze generation…

What is everyone else doing to prep?

Its Ludum Dare this weekend btw, I was thinking of taking part as a practice for GigJam next weekend.

I’ve entered for the hell of it but I’m on holiday in Egypt so I’ll have to do the bulk of the work in two charge cycles of my macbook air by the pool. Should be interesting

Seven in a week is tough, jayenkai is doing one every week for a few years now but i’m happy with 1+ a month. The great thing about doing prototypes that quickly, you can go back years after and make a proper game out of it

** MOVED TO UPDATE OF ORIGINAL POST **

That’s just awesome! I wish I could go that fast!

3 down… 4 to go…

See top of thread for details.

@roaminggamer

Here are some ideas for game #7:

endless mower -  “So mulch Lawn”

road crossing game - a la frogger / freeway

… and  there’s always the atari 2600 ‘Adventure’ clone i suggested on an old thread

Sounds cool!

It also might be interesting to publish some or all of the source code for free… (***look up at the ceiling and whistle innocently***)

How about an infinite sandbox game with automatic map generation for the seventh one? Or a tower defense?

I’ve finished the prototype coding for the Schmup and moved on to the ‘pinball’ game.  As promised, here is a video showing my progress to date on the the first four games:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irxadxb9UP0

Please note, I will stop ‘new game’ development on Saturday morning and start polishing, packaging, and publishing.  If I have time left over on Sunday I’ll try to finish any incomplete game(s).

So far it is looking good for 5 out of 7, but the schmup gave me real headaches.  There is a bug in the turret code that is driving me crazy.

Anyways, onward and upwards.

Wow! I for one can’t wait to see what you manage to pull off in 48 hours on a single game

Game #5 (Pinball) is coded.  Here is a video of the prototype:

Hello again!  I ended up finishing 6 of the 7 games I challenged myself to make.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYkZ0MvoUHs

I will be publishing them together in a single app (as shown in video) on Monday.  I could publish tonight, but I want to double check the features and do a last check for bugs first.

So, by delaying, I am not making the original goal of 7 games published within 7 days, but I think you’ll all be happier with the end result if I take a little longer to publish.

The app will come out on the Google android store first, then on the Apple store.   Yes, it will be free.  :stuck_out_tongue:

Very impressive and well done!

Awesome work @RoamingGamer - Can’t wait to see what you end up doing for the 48hr GigJam.

Great Effort!!

Say, what tool(s) did you use to create the video demo (simulator and highlighted mouse clicks)? I need such a tool so that I can send demos of my apps to my clients.

@All -

  • The Android version is available on the Google Play Apps Store: http://bit.ly/17uykGo
  • The iOS version has been submitted, but it will probably be a while yet…

@Eddierush - I use screencast-o-matic pro to do my screencasts.  Tip: If you use it, turn  up the FPS option to the max (its hidden in the options, but makes a big difference.)
