High school students: receive college credit and learn Corona!

This Fall (2012) my university will be offering a dual-enrollment course in Mobile Application Development. This course will allow you to earn high school and college credit at the same time.

I believe it would be restricted to students in the USA, but if you’re interested and are outside the USA, contact me and we will see if we can make something work.

If you would like more information, let me know!

I should clarify that this course has a prerequisite of Algebra 2.

Also, I am a licensed high school teacher and principal, as well as having a doctorate in education (and wrote the textbook on mobile app development with Corona). [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89697[/import]

that’s great
will they be offering online classes
my daughter may be interested if they do [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89704[/import]

Wow, can’t believe I didn’t include that information!
Yes, the course is 100% online, and will be offered on a 1 academic year schedule to better accommodate high schools. [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89706[/import]

ahh just saw algebra 2 a prerequisite she’s taking that start of next year [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89708[/import]

I don’t think this will be a one time offering. I expect to offer it again in 2013! [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89710[/import]

I’m a junior in high school in NY, and I’m interested. Can you explain how this gives me credits? How do the online classes work?

Thanks  [import]uid: 7116 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89729[/import]

I’ll be taking Algebra 2 next year. Will I have to wait until the year after to be eligible for your class? Also, where can I find the specifics if I’m eligible? [import]uid: 103624 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89768[/import]

You will earn 3 hours of college credit from Abilene Christian University. These hours can be transferred to your college of choice upon successfully completing the course.

I am in the process of building the online course using moodle which will include reading assignments, lecture, and projects to complete.
If your high school accepts the course as a dual-enrollment (depends the school, usually there is very little problem), the course counts for one of your high school classes for the year.
The class is a full academic year in length (180 days) and should count for 1 credit on a high school transcript.
USUALLY, you will go to a computer lab or library during that class period to work on your assignments for the class, but this will vary from school to school.

I think the requirement is that you will have completed Algebra 2, but I will check and see if concurrent enrollment will be allowed.

We are working on a full description of the course. I will post the specifics as soon as I have more information. [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89908[/import]

thanks

I look forward to learning more about the program! [import]uid: 7116 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 89944[/import]

I think that the Moodle (Distance Learning) course is a brilliant idea and if available in the next few months I certainly would sign up. Since I live/work in the UK I am not sure about the value of the credits. I am working through your ebook and so far have found it not only interesting, easy to read/follow, but very informative and well written - thanks. Hi, I would be taking Algebra 2 next year. Will I have to wait to take it? Will there be any exceptions? [import]uid: 123067 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 90601[/import]

Thanks Robert, I’m glad your enjoying the book!
Your right, credits from an USA University probably wouldn’t be much use to you.
I’m working on other projects that will bring mobile app training to everyone/anyone (but without college credit).
As soon as it is ready to go, I will post it here. [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 90617[/import]

Right now, there won’t be any exceptions, but we plan to continue to offer the class in the future. This shouldn’t be a one-off offering! [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 90618[/import]

Next year then. :stuck_out_tongue:

We’ll see how devoted I am to Corona then.

You mentioned college credits. Does that make it an equivalent of AP/Honors? [import]uid: 103624 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 90635[/import]

Since it is an online course, would it be possible to take the course even though I am entering my sophomore year of college in the fall? I’m a business information technology major and I’d love to participate and earn some credits as well.

Thanks

has the decision for taking algebra 2 has been decided. Is it required to take it? Also how would the schedule be for the classes I need to know so I can tell my principal about, even though I’m the only programmer in the school. Also only person in the school that is interested in this kind of stuff. [import]uid: 17058 topic_id: 22494 reply_id: 107259[/import]

Alex,
I will be offering an online college course next summer (as planned now). I am also developing courses on my website that will be available later this summer that will not be for college credit.
