is mac mini 2.6 Ghz i5 2015 good for developers ?

Hi,

I want to ask about mac mini 2015 with dual core i5 CPU2.6 GHz and intel iris GPU,

may main usage is going to be for developing with corona and photoshop for designing and watching movies.

I don’t understand so much about hardware, but is this going to be good for me ?

thanks.

Yes it’s enough good. Corona doesn’t take much resources, about 25Mb for its simulator. But I wonder if the screen size is too small for you to work with. It’s better to have an external screen in case.

Yes that’s more than enough horse power.   How much memory does it have? That might be your first limitation.

Rob

Hi Rob, thanx for answering, it has 8 GB of RAM, is that perfect ?

8GB is plenty for developing Corona Apps.  That will give you enough headroom for running one or more instances of the simulator (in rare cases), tools, XCode, etc.

For comparison, I run Windows on 6GB mem and I have half-a dozen tools and sometimes run at many at 8 copies of the simulator (for experiments and quick screen size testing).  I have a faster CPU, but we’re talking memory and I don’t run low.

Cheers,

Ed

it’s not macbook, it’s a mac that you connect to a monitor.

Hi Ed, so depending on what you said I good to go with it, please take a look at this :

  • 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
  • 8GB memory
  • 1TB hard drive1
  • Intel Iris Graphics
  • OS X Yosemite

am I good to go ?

This is basically the same specs as my 2012 MacBook Pro.  You have a faster CPU.  I maxed my memory out at 16GB but I do a lot of Photoshop work with really big photos.  Corona SDK will be quite happy with 8GB.  I don’t know much about the video card, but it’s modern enough to run.

Rob

Hi Rob, How big your photos are ?, I should be working on +2000*2000 pixel, but most of the time I work on 1500*1000 images.

is that 8GB of ram enough for me ?

Also I would run it on 2k monitor, will i get that retina displays issue with corona ?

Everything sounds good except the Iris Graphics and that is likely fine for Corona dev.  You’ll find it unsatisfactory for 3D gaming, but 2D dev should be just fine.

Also, 2000 x 2000 pixels image is no prob 8GB of mem.

I generate 6000 x 6000 on my machine and I’ve only got 6GB.

Happy coding w/ Corona!

I shoot with a Nikon D800 which is a 36mp camera.  It produces a 7360 x 4912 pixel image and since I shoot in RAW, I’m dealing with at least 16 bits per channel and 32 bits per channel at times.  The files are a little big

But for Corona SDK, I probably never work with images much bigger than 2048x2048.

Rob

thank you guys, you two helped me a lot.
