Lua 2D Game Engine: Moai beta

Open source and Free Lua 2D Game Engine, what do you think ?

@yuewah,

It is a good concept but it is still a bit too complicate to be used as an engine, If I have to use something complicated, I can use Objective-C. Sparrow is another framework that comes close as it is modeled on the AS3 type framework, it still is not exactly user friendly uses Objective-C and cocos2D.

Corona by far is the easiest to use for game development.

On the bright side - Ansca has competition and we all know what this means for us  [import]uid: 12704 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43785[/import]

Moai produces native applications on iOS and Android. The Lua engine and libraries are compiled from C++. And the Lua script is run as interpreted byte code, is Corona used the same technology ? [import]uid: 12088 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43789[/import]

From the FAQ: " Games built with Moai can also run natively on Windows, Macintosh and Linux."

…but one must point out that it’s still in beta and that’s a “still to come” feature…

It will be great if ansca staff comes to this thread then shouting

“Challenge Accepted!”

;)? [import]uid: 41267 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43792[/import]

compared to the community here their forum is like the sahara desert… mostly empty. [import]uid: 70635 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43798[/import]

“Love the new Moai Cloud. How much simpler could it get?” — Robert Nay, Nay Games

D’oh! [import]uid: 10389 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43823[/import]

@WauloK - That’s for the moai *Cloud* portion, which really is quite nice, and I’m using it for some new stuff in Bubble Ball soon. As for Moai itself (coding game), I haven’t done much with it. Let me say that it’s not sugar-coated like Corona is. It’s more like trying to tackle Cocos2D, except the added Android and future platform support. Ah ok! I thought you might be leaving us! Whew! [import]uid: 10389 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43825[/import]

Hmm, another thought: do you think Moai is the competitor mentioned in http://www.carlosicaza.com/2011/06/30/how-can-a-simple-call/ ??
[import]uid: 8782 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43828[/import]

@yuewah: Very interesting. Thanks for the link. [import]uid: 5712 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43858[/import]

Update: It’s not Moai, they haven’t even been around for 12 months!

Also, you don’t have to write php proxy scripts, that was just an architectural decision on my part that required it. Moai works with any library that has HTTP support (corona, unity, cocos2d, moai, etc.)

They just went into open beta this morning, too! [import]uid: 8782 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 44076[/import]

Heh. If Corona had *LUA*-based cloud services (same language as game, awesome, right?) I would use them, as they would be nicely integrated into corona apps. Moai cloud services are still quite easy to use in Corona, just easy http post and get calls.

No guarantees about leaving Corona, though… JK! [import]uid: 8782 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 43827[/import]

I tried them out, went through their example and I have to say, I am REALLY impressed.
if this is what they are capable of during beta, I cant wait to see the finished product!

@jayantv how is it complicated? when I go through their examples, it feels exactly like Corona actually? Although, moai’s naming convention is more uhh…questionable…

Corona and Ansca as you should all know by now takes competition in it’s stride

After all, this thread is still open, isn’t it? [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 44190[/import]

competition is always healthy - it keeps everyone in their toes and from ‘falling back on their laurels’…

it is the spirit of entrepreneurship …

I think all competitors miss the forest for the tree right now.

The only way a middleware vendor is going to succeed is if users of the said middleware can actually eke out a living using it.
And I am not talking about being able to quote a handful of developers who actually made a profit on their investment.

80%+ of apps on the app store are free.
Ads, for a relatively successful app, can get you something like $30 a day.

The labour cost of developing an app can easily reach $10K or $20K. If you rely on ads, it could take you 2 years to break even.

Sure, there are lottery winners, people who spend $5K on a project and strike the motherlode with millions of downloads, but that’s pretty much equivalent to finding gold during the gold rush.

The above is not a ding on ANSCA or Moai or anyone else. It’s just a sad statement of facts. The only sure winner right now is Apple. Whether developers make money or not, they win.

During a gold rush, the smart people sell picks and shovels rather than panning for gold.

If only I were smart. [import]uid: 1560 topic_id: 11997 reply_id: 53962[/import]

Here’s a wonderful article that I felt explains a lot in detail here
