No app sound on iPad 4; works on iPad 2 -- both iOS 7.1.1 -- any idea why?

I’m trying to help a customer who can’t hear my app’s sound on her iPad 4, but can hear it on her iPad 2. Sound works on most of her other iPad4 apps.

I have 6 apps in store, some for 2 years. All sound coded the same. No problems to date.

To eliminate the obvious, we’ve run through all of the typical checklist items:

Mute & Volume buttons, sliders, control panel settings

Turn off bg apps

Reboot iPad

No luck. Has anything changed recently? Anyone had this problem crop up?

Any idea what’s causing this and/or how to resolve?

Thanks very much  for any help that you can give.

L

Hi @lbolduc,

As far as I know, no changes have been made to the audio engine in quite some time. You say that sound works on “most” of her other iPad4 apps, so does this mean that it doesn’t work on all of them except your recent Corona-built app?

Thanks,

Brent

Hi Brent,

The sound DOES work on all of her other apps except mine. She also cited another “Montessori planet” app from a different developer with “the exact same problem” – meaning that, like my Corona-built app, sound for that planet app works on her iPad2, but not her iPad4. My app is not recently built. This version has been on sale since 12/14/13 (first launched 11/22/11).

Strange, right? Sound for all 6 of my apps works perfectly on my iPad 1, 2, and 3. Makes me wonder about the latest iOS in combination with an iPad 4 Retina and possibly Corona?

Thanks for any help that you can give.

Lynne

Just out of curiosity, is your orientation lock button locked?  (Its the button right above the volume control)  This is sometimes used as a mute key and may be muting your sound.

Rob

Hi Rob,

No, I sent her a list of things to try. She has checked the side switch (mute/orientation) button, external volume button, the system settings in General and Sound, the onscreen Control Panel’s Mute and volume slider, double-clicked Home button to swipe-close any apps that are open in the background, and rebooted the iPad by holding down the Home and Power buttons simultaneously.

Can you think of anything else to try?

Thanks,

L

That sounds like a good battery of tests.  I guess its too much to ask that your tester has access to Xcode to look at the console log?

Rob

She is a customer who was nice enough to contact me for help rather than write a nasty review. I’m not ready to ask her to ramp up her Xcode skills … but, it’s still early

I’d be glad to send you a promo code, so that you can run it on an iPad4 @Corona and check the console. Would that help?

Lynne

There’s no especially good reason this should work (but that doesn’t mean it won’t!) - you should ask her to delete and reinstall the app. I’ve seen stranger things that can be solved by a reinstall…

PM me a code and I’ll look at it, but it will be tomorrow night before I can.

Rob

Hi, schroederapps.

I agree that’s a good idea, cause what the heck, right? Sometimes it works. She had thought to try it too. No luck. Thank you for trying to help.

L

Rob, will do. No worries on the timeframe. I’m sure you’re busy. Thank you!

It’s playing sound just fine on my iPad 4.

Fascinating … good news for the app in general, not so much for the woman without sound. I’ll let her know. Thanks very much for checking it out. I appreciate your quick response. Best, L
