Plugin pricing - free to paid?

Hello,

I am curious if a plugin that is submitted as “free” can be changed to “paid” at a later date.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Chris! Nice to see you posting again! (And dig the new avatar)

Yes, you can change a plugin from free to paid. I did this with my own Twitter and Stripe plugins earlier this year.

Hey Chris (long time no see), Just keep in mind customers don’t like it when you make a free product paid.

Unless you add a chunk of usefulness then I think it’s fair game!

I’d also add that you can opt to allow current license-holders to retain their (free) licenses. That’s how I did it with my own plugins. If you got in early, good on 'ya. Newcomers must pay a small, reasonable, fee. I haven’t received any blowback - though I’d note that the rate of activations dropped when they stopped being free.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! And a hearty “Hello” as well.

I was thinking more of it for seeing if a particular plugin gained traction, though that may not be the right way to do it.

In my case I would like to tie a plugin with cloud offerings. The cloud side of it would be free, but the plugin would be paid.

Does the marketplace provide any type of promo codes, or the like?

Not with the current marketplace, There is supposed to be a big change to the marketplace (soon q3 of 2017 https://coronalabs.com/roadmap/). I don’t know if this is included

How about a full (i.e. paid) and lite (i.e. free) give devs a choice?

Depending on your setup, that may be more trouble than it is worth.

@SphereGameStudios  - Good tip! Didn’t consider that.

@Scott Harrison - I can see your point, would certainly be something to think out in advance.

Thanks!

Hey Chris,

I am very happy you are back, still using Coronium!!!

Take care,

Rui

That’s very kind of you Rui, thanks! Keep on the lookout for more Coronium stuff coming. Cheers, -dev

Starting free and changing to paid later may not offer a good metric of how successful a paid plugin would be. You will likely get more people activating the free plugin than would consider purchasing one.

We don’t have any promo codes in our current marketplace, but we are going to revamp it and I can had promo codes to the wishlist for the new marketplace. You are in control of your pricing (minimum $1.50) and you can run sales by lowering your price temporarily.

Rob

@RobMiracle - Thanks for the feedback. I like the idea of starting with a lower price. Having promo codes (or the like) interests me for testing purposes, without exposing code. Unless there is another way to do this currently.

We don’t have a way to do promos now.
