Rebranding Corona

I might go with smth like Rise that has more relatable meanings (sun rise, rise and shine, reborn… I like this meaning: find the strength or ability to respond adequately to (a challenging situation).

You could also go with Rise2D or iRise2D with even more religious and spiritual undertones.

Personally I like Solar2D, and I’m not being funny but the last thing I would like to see is any kind of religious connection.

I’m not sure religious undertones are really needed for a game engine? And adding a lowercase “i” to the name would probably cause issues, or at the very least misunderstandings.

It’s Solar2D (Solar, Solar 2D, Solar 2d, or some combination). We have the domain name solar2d.com. We have people submitting Logos and other marketing collateral around that name. We’ve extended the deadline for branding submissions until this weekend. It’s too late to be changing names now.

Rob

Agree about avoiding religious undertones and It’s not that I don’t like Solar, I was just throwing a new idea out there that I got from Sun rise and it seemed more methaphorical and meaningful somehow. As I said, I especially like the part about being able to rise to the challange.
I have no problems with Solar2D, but I read a lot about solar energy, solar roof and what not on google news etc., hence my concern.

Solar2D is fine. Only Solar will be tough on google. I’ll delete my previous posts to stop the confusion. Sorry.

I don’t use Slack, so I would like to know if you have already defined a logo for Solar2D or do you have a date to announce?

There have been over 30 submissions (probably closer to 50 if you count where people put multiple logos in a single file) that the community is trying to figure out what they like the best. We gave them until this weekend to provide Vlad and me their top 5 and from there we will pick the one we like and start going with it. Hopefully we won’t take too long to make a decision once we have it narrowed down. While May 1 isn’t a hard deadline to have everything rebranded, we certainly would like to have some progress made by then.

The submissions for the new logo for Solar2D have been going around in Slack only so far, and so here is a link to a Google Forms poll where you can vote for your three favourite submissions.

The results of this poll will be used as a reference when Rob and Vlad decide on the final logo.

Go cast your votes at https://forms.gle/79XLGdHGug5F4MSB7

Note to all - many of these logos are just concepts, absolutely not final renders, and some have a number of other variants that the artists have produced following feedback within the Slack channel. So vote for those you like the idea of rather than those you think just look like better quality graphics please.

Great work moving forward with the rebrand name and logo. I just voted in the logo poll, some good options in there.

Somebody asked me what engine I was using for the game last week and we both cringed after saying Corona, even with some explanation.

Solar2D, nice improvement to go along with the open-sourcing!

A couple of very important notes!

  1. A new logo was added. It was one of those suggested but was inadvertently left out. In fairness, if you have already voted, you should go back and re-vote. It will overwrite your existing votes, so if you like #34 better, you have a chance to replace your vote.

  2. There have been some technical questions about the rules. As I stated in Slack. We are looking for opinions. This is not a scientific poll. It alone will not determine the winner. Right now, you get three votes per email address. Please don’t “game” the system. That’s not helpful. Just let us know what you like, vote once and wait on Vlad and I to pick the winner. You can vote three times for the same logo or vote for three different logos.  Just vote for one if you like.

I’m computing two scores: 1 where each of the three votes are equal weight and 1 where first choice is more valuable than the 2nd choice which is more valuable that the third.

As of right now, regardless of the two methods, one is clearly in the lead. A pack of 5-6 stand out from the rest of the field.

The voting will remain open until 5pm EDT on Monday. I’ll recalculate the scores and get up with Vlad to pick a winner from the top 5.

But please, if you have already voted, go back and look at the missed entry and see if it changes your mind.

34 is Wonderful! I know it’s a vote and it has to be democratic, but it would be a waste not to be the 34 logo! it has everything to do with Solar2D, it is simple, it has the experience of being more professional, impactful, its color can be changed to fit any background, it can be recognized anywhere just by the logo without needing the name Solar2D (Some have the name inserted in the logo itself), has reference to the term “Solar” as well as to the Lua language! Using this logo, I could do both the marketing of the tool and the lua language, which also needs help to be more widespread in the world.

In short, 34 is perfect!

I am a bit late here but just saw that rebranding is happening.

First let’s look at LOVE and their site. It’s sweet, as sweet as for kids. Too sweet for my taste but it has warmth and is welcoming to stay. LOVE has something but it is definitely not the best 2d engine because we all know who is. Let’s put aside all things LOVE makes differently like marketing and so. Let’s look at their website only. You can clearly see that it is orientated at newcomers and beginners, obviously old-timers don’t care about things like a “love whale” (please) they are all about speed and efficiency. This is an attempt to buy new people with a first impression and new people is everything.
And man, you just need to download it, try it, and soon you read in the forum that this is the best engine there is and you stay. It is LOVE or it is Corona, everybody get their own belief. I speak in general.

So why I am writing this here at all? I will tell you - when you see something beautiful you know immediately that this is it. And from all these logos I haven’t seen anything worth to be taken for such important role. I don’t want to offend anybody nor criticize. It’s just one man’s opinion, and understanding what is beautiful. Any of those logos left me thinking that this is nice or good, just some left me with - not bad. They haven’t grabbed my attention for even a second. Obviously it’s not a final product but for now I am saying, man it’s not good, not good at all.

I think that we should choose not the best from what we have, but to find really good. I think that we should put more time into it and make it right. Great ideas become bad ideas in no time, same as good logos stops looking good next day and opposite a bad names can start to seem really nice really fast. Solar2D? I know it, we all know it. And I know there is not that much time left for it all. But guys, the name, the logo, both are so important. It’s to come and to stay.

I don’t think we should go with mechanical look as I see in some of these logos, I think we should go more playful without stretching it too much and make it for kids (LOVE please). It still should look solid and serious but it has to have playfulness too. I think combination of those are most beautiful thing if it’s done right. So, to be clear and to ask visitor to look around for a moment it’s a must. I am speaking not just about logo solely but all design of the page matters. Logo is an important part which definitely, to some degree, shapes a look of the page.

So by surprise I am coming with my own logo. Haha.
I have a bit different idea. A logo which is very minimalistic and can be easily modified. Modified to look differently every entry, every day, every week etc. I think it brings some charm, even small and maybe even not noticeable by some, but still. We can be a bit different and have something different than everyone else.

I am no graphic designer nor I know a lot about it. But I got this idea instantly and I thought it’s brilliant. By the end of this write up I don’t think it’s brilliant anymore and it’s also not easily adaptable. In no time I went from brilliant to not bad and not really good. I did it already so I share it on Slack for no contest. Maybe it will come up as a great.

It is less about my logo and more juts to share my thoughts about what we are doing and what we are choosing from. And for now I just can’t see anything as a good choice and to me it’s really strange to hear people using word as perfect, wonderful or even nice for the things we have there. But what I know. I don’t think name Solar2D is brilliant either. Doable but not brilliant. Then you look at Facebook, nothing good about it too.

Anyway, getting back to me and my logo. I looked online and there is a tons of more beautiful logos than this I just made. But none of them modifies as easily as mine. It’s more about idea than look. But look too. Who can represent Sun better than circle? Circle with a sunbeam. That’s about it.

It’s very easy to be subjective and think about your ideas as a brilliant ideas and wonderful ideas.

What do you think? Can we make it from bubbles and circles, haha.

In my opinion, comparing Corona / Solar with any other tool, be it love2d or any other, is a waste of time, each one does its marketing in its own way, whether it works or not, it has to be different things, and the visitor has to realize that. I respect your opinion, but it is clear that any choice you make will never please everyone, but what really matters are the features of the tool, PHP has a horrible logo, but who cares? 70% of the internet runs PHP, so even though the logo is now a priority, it shouldn’t be the most important thing in this change of the Brand, but the features and the recruitment of more users to increase the community.

My Input:

Corona --> Coronium

Coronium, also called newtonium, was the name of a suggested chemical element, hypothesised in the 19th century. The name, inspired by the solar corona, was given by A. Gruenwald in 1887. A new atomic thin green line in the solar corona was then considered to be emitted a new element unlike anything else seen under laboratory conditions. Because of this it was also mis-classified as Iron Line Number 1474.

That keeps some continuity between names so that a large awareness campaign is less necessary.

fun and games! Greg

I am not trying to compare those two tools here. I am saying that we should use everything what we can to help us to move forward, and I am suggesting that look is more important that it may seem and that cool name is cool to have. But maybe it’s just me who likes nice things. What I can compare with actually is - “good looking people have more chances of getting a job” and not just. First is look then is introduction. Online it happens both ways, but when look comes first you want it to be there. When you search for a new tool to work with you can find that every tool says how good of a tool it is.There is marketing, there is friends, there is advices. But without that how people choose? Definitely nobody thinks, ohh this looks really nice I am taking it, I am taking this - just look at this logo. Definitely not. But it is still there. It may be small fraction who comes like this, but it’s cheaply and easily doable thing. And user by user, word by word works really well. I can’t not to repeat it -  it’s good to have nice and cool tool. And if it does the magic too, it’s brilliant

And true, look it’s not really that important when you put it aside engine itself. Engine is place where magic happens and it’s definitely by far above all. No question.

We all sitting here thinking -  the Corona, the best 2d engine. Tell me, are we delusional? I can’t tell myself, I haven’t tried any other tool, I only read what other people say here and I am already believing it’s best. If it’s true, how does that happen that we need to share market with other 2d engines then? We need to learn that and use it. We need to look. If we are best then we shouldn’t struggle most. I say we, I haven’t done much here and I am still very new but I feel part of it already and I wish best.

Of course It’s easy for me to talk only and not to give any real advice. I just don’t want us to end up with something unattractive. People need to love it, not just inside but outside too.

Coronium is the name used by @Develephant for his Lua Online services. It was never a consideration. We love what @Develephant has done  and that’s his name.

Rob

#gudrutis1 some valid points there. Get them while they are young - a wise marketing guy for Playboy told me that a long time ago. Once you’ve got them, they will come back from time to time even if they leave you for a while.
Focus on good tuts for beginners, online and school courses etc. while delivering new and updated tools for the advanced. All more important than the logo in my opinion. I didn’t like old logo all that much to be honest, but I love Corona Sdk.

In a long run though, yes, all the details matter.

Fair Enough, but his name is less relevant when you change Corona to Solar … he’s going to have to become Solarium

My thoughts on this whole rebranding thing:

  1. It’s great that a decision has been made to move away from the Corona name. Sure, it’s unfortunate that it had to happen, but we’ll have to do our best in promoting the new name and help newcomers find all the help and info that’s available out there under the Corona name.

  2. Solar2D is a perfectly fine name. I don’t see any point in trying to argue against that name at this stage.

  3. Some of the logos definitely look as good as, or better than, the current Corona logotyp. So just pick the most popular one after the vote and be done with it. A logotype can always be improved or changed later on. At this stage there are more important things to handle. The logotype is not what will make or break Solar2D in my opinion. I don’t think that a single one of you started using Corona in the first place because of its logotype…
