Rebranding Corona

anamanda 2d - I think we should go with girlish name. Men, girls, even there is no girls, everybody likes it, everybody loves it, everybody are heart taken. Good.

There is rhythmical names and there is heavy names. I was reading something about it a while ago, I can’t recall what exactly it was about, but one thing I do remember - the rhythmical name is the name you want to go with. Maybe someone who is more knowledgeable can add more to this.

And there is really something to it. You just try to say anamanda 10 times and it gets into you like a rime. The Solar2D just don’t stick like that.

Imagine someone is looking for a new engine, researching it and reads same name again and again. Sometimes it’s hard to say why someone chooses one but not the other. You add pros, you and cons and often it’s a small margin, close decision. Sometimes something just pulls towards the one. When you can’t make strong decision you go with the feel. I can’t stress this enough as I am afraid this is overlooked here.

The more I think about it the more I believe it can be a small key to a success. Imagine if we can win every small margin battle or imagine we lose all of them. You can win. When one is quiet and the other repeats itself again and again - anamanda, anamanda, it calls you, invites you, we can call it spell. And you win when you are the one who cast the spell.

Small margins are everywhere. And now it’s big.

And most important. Finally we would be able not to repeat circles on every logo. That’s great.

I say let’s get free, let’s open our minds and make it beautiful and unforgettable.

The name is Solar2D, that’s been decided.

I’m not sure if you are trolling or not, I’m still a bit sleep deprived from Ludum Dare, but you are too late with the name suggestions for rebranding. The name is pretty much set by now and the ongoing efforts are to find a fitting logo.

Let’s just make it and it will be fine - I don’t think we should approach things this way, I don’t think it’s right.

There is a lot of things to handle but we are here to discuss rebranding. I am solely concentrating on rebranding. I dont know why some of you would want to put it aside like a thing we do now and never see it again.

Edit:

Yes, I know I am late. It’s like a last resort, who knows. If people who have chosen this name really feels like this is it, it’s fine. I shouldn’t feel sad about it just because I don’t see it as a fit. I just hope it’s not - lets just pick it and get over it.

I also think trolling, it is a kind of melancholy opinion mixed with philosophy and poetry, and the name is already defined and the logo is missing only Rob and Vlad choose. Always changing something according to the opinion of some people we will not get anywhere, I am not saying that there must be authoritarianism and forget the democratic vote of the community, nor cover up the ears for opinions, but there are certain things that must be defined independently the personal taste of a minority.

Hi, 34 is very clean and usable in many formats. My vote for sure. -dev

Is it a mistake or has the voting ended?

After May 1, fork the code and call your version Anamanda 2D!

Ta-dah!

#J. A. Whye that’s a great idea, haha.

But things like logo, name, marketing doesn’t impact me, nor my presence here in any way, I am already here so name or no name I am to stay. All I was thinking was what would be something to someone who is not familiar with it that would lead him to try it out. It’s not logo, it’s not name - you may laugh. You don’t need to - we don’t have marketing. So how we make others to jump on it. We can tell them how good of an engine it is, but it’s competitive world. It’s combination of things. Have a good product but no marketing, no memorable name, no good look. It’s getting harder with each loss. How easy is to make it in this era, it’s not very easy. But, but Flappy Bird did it. Correct.

PHP was mentioned above. This is not good comparison. PHP have a lot of things Corona don’t and it’s just floats if not goes down. If we want to float in this state we are now in we definitely can. But man, I wish we would be able to see a rise. And you start with small things by making it right.

The open source is the thing you all bet on now, and I hope it can work like you expect. I don’t know far history but I chose Corona not because it was not open source. I chose it for a reason. And now, reason plus reason equals two reasons. Looks promising to me. But it’s not mine expertise.

And Open source is great to people who cares about it as same as other things care to other people.

Don’t need to tell me how little rebranding matters, I see it as a part. On the other side people in community says it doesn’t matter at all. Well, for us not, so that’s why it’s probably hard to see how it can matter for someone else. Some people technical, some visual, people lean on to different things. Different people, different needs. Maybe you can tell me why you chose Corona but can you tell me why he or she chose LOVE.

I am not talking about importance of this rebranding for us, current users, I never did. We use it, it works, we are happy. And it also is best, right. I am talking about new users and about small gap of a time when you get a thought and press download. There is no free will, there is right stimulation and you have it. You can call me crazy but all I do is use science.

I made a bit of noise from all this thing here but in the end I am glad we have new name and soon new logo.

Voting has ended

And the winner is… #28

Votes were counted in 3 different ways:

  • bulk sum of all votes
  • weighted votes (first choice 3 points, second - 2 points and third - 1 point)
  • round system, where next choice is counted if previous didn’t make it in the top 5

All the calculations produced same result. We had a clear top 3: #19, #28 and #34
And 3 runner-ups: #8, #30 and #32

After some deliberation, taking in further feedback from the #rebrand slack channel, we have our final decision.

The main points for us was several facts:

  1. The bauble is pretty unique, it represents the spark igniting the community, or even a solar flair, but it’s memorable.

  2. The Color’s are bold and provide us a great starting pallet to build the new website on.

  3. We really like the Sci-fi feel of the font.

  4. It looks great monochrome

  5. We have an icon ready to go

Look forward to the new logo coming soon.

This is really good news.

Quietly, I also voted No. 28 (haha).

Reminds me of 90s. Old school cool?

Hm, not many reactions to the new logo. I suspect it was a second or third choice for many - I might be one of them;). I would polish it some but no matter, 1 week to go… Long live Solar2D.

@Odisej, you’d be incorrect. Reactions flooded to Slack’s rebrand channel before it was posted here on the forums. This logo wasn’t my choice either, but it was one of the top candidates. Also, the name is Solar2D, not Solaris2D. :stuck_out_tongue:

Corrected, thanks. Wouldn’t want to pledge to the wrong name, even though I like Tarkovsky;)

The logo is good even though it wasn’t my first choice.  For some reason though the choice of font doesn’t seem to hit the mark and I can’t quite put my finger on why.

Hi Rob,

Can we extend the deadline until sunday evening? that gives me time to work in this during the weekend. I’m the co-founder of a 40-man branding studio ( www.wewantmore.studio ) so this type of work is our bread and butter, and I’d like to have a go at it…

EDIT:

Ah, sorry, never mind - apparently I was responding to an older post… Okay, it’s done then.

i know it’s late, i’ve been away for some reasons but i thought i had to put my two cents about the logo. i think the idea is good but unfortunately the execution is lacking; feels dated, gives the wrong message about the usability of the product and dare i say, it feels cold. i think the logo should be inviting, warm and give an impression of “easy to use” nature. then, i said to myself “don’t tell, show”. it took me about 15 mins to come up with this example logo but i guess it explains what i’m trying to say. it has that “ignite” and science feel (with 2d placement). it’s all lowercase and round which i feel makes it welcoming. well, i had to do it because i want corona… erm solar 2d to succeed and be with us for a long time.
