So i was using Texture Packer(for the Corona feature) but the trial ended. I am not willing to pay for it, so is there any alternative sprite makers? Looked into ShoeBox and Predator but couldnt find a download link for predator and shoebox was for Adobe air.
Why are you not willing to pay for it? It is an excellent tool. It is the definitive tool I suggest to all new users.
Sure you can probably work out a way to get by with ShoeBox (a tool I have installed on my machine), but you’ll have to invest time to get what you need.
Why not just trade that time for money and then be sure you’re good to go.
This is sort off short term need for this. I just need a sprite maker that will automatically create a datasheet for the sprite
Let me ask my question a different way.
Are you going to sell your game or try to make money on it? If so, why not invest in tools and help tool makers sustain their businesses.
I know some folks don’t like it when I say these things, but I think if anyone is in game development to make money, they should spend money too. An “Everything Free All The Time” system is not sustainable and will collapse.
Finally, to answer your question as best I can, I don’t think there are any free tools available that will do what you want. At the very best, you’ll be able to find a free tool that puts out a format of data you can convert manually or via scripts to what you need.
Texturepacker is the one to use if you want sprite sheets.
It works out scaling and different sheets sizes automatically, saving me a lot of time and effort.
Yes of course I could live without it, but there is no way I’ll chose to live without it.
The price of such a product usually reflect its usability and strengths compared to the competition.
RG also makes a strong point about sustainability, well worth thinking about for a moment.
I forgot to ask, but why didn’t ShoeBox work for you? There is an AdobeAir for both OS X and Windows for free, or at least there was the last time I installed it.

Please tell us, are you using a Mac or a PC?

If you still want to use ShoeBox and it didn’t work for you, why or how did it not work for you? We may be able to help you with that.
I still think TexturePacker is the #1 solution, but if you want to invest effort into making ShoeBox work for you and are stuck on technical issues, I’m cool with trying to help.
I didnt to try ShoeBox yet, only because you needed Adobe Air for it and heard not so great things about it. TexturePacker is a great program and I am not saying that i wont invest money into it; but for the product im making currently; I would only need to use it once or twice.
I wrote my own a decade ago and since then modified it over time to fit whatever my actual needs are. For most of my needs it’s much better then any of the shelf tool but on the other side, TexturePacker has features I’ll never be able to implement as it’s just to much work and I’d be a fool to try doing so when there’s a cheap solution available already.
I’d expect there are many free tools available, a very quick google search found f.i. this one
or this
The tools Michael linked can totally be used to do what you want.
You’ll just have to do a little scripting. Easy peasy. Note: If you can’t figure this out, I could probably put together an example for your using some of your artwork as a hit.
Well I realised I could do the things I wanted with Texture Packer even without paying. However it does make one of my objects colored in red; but I guess that’s fair considering I’m not paying for it.
I encourage you to buy it or use a free tool.
Texturepacker is the best few $ I ever spent… end off.
As a dev surely you expect to get paid for your work… why not the tools you use?
@garygusep2,
Hi. I just submitted a new plugin (not yet approved) that will allow you to use any of these tools to produce imagesheets, images, and sprites:
-
Texture Packer by CodeAndWeb - The plugin supports this tool because:
- It is the BEST solution out there and I really want to support CodeAndWeb.
- If you can’t afford it now, you can upgrade later and continue to code the same way. (See note below)
- ShoeBox
- Free Texture Packer 0.2.4
- Leshy Sprite Tool
_ Note: The plugin maintains the same API signature for all helpers so if you switch from one tool to another later (or mix them in the same project), updating your code is drop-dead-simple._
Docs: https://roaminggamer.github.io/RGDocs/pages/Plugins/texturepackerhelpers/
Again, this isn’t approved yet. I’ll make a official announcement as soon as it is.
The plugin is now available: https://forums.coronalabs.com/topic/71178-sprite-sheets-for-developers-on-a-budget/
