SSK2: Fundamentals Series

I found that new Corona SDK community members often encounter many of the same problems and that the foundation of these problems originates from a lack of experience.

This is not a bad thing.  It is simply the way things are.

New developers come into a community and their first instinct is to make a favorite game or the current hot game.

As you would imagine, many quickly become stuck and frustrated.  I see this too often and have struggled with how to address this issue.

It is my firm belief that all 2D game developers should learn a common set of base concepts *AND* should make a common set of ‘fundamental’ games.

Having a conviction is great, but action is better.  So, I decided that as time permits, I will provide ‘fundamental’ game samples and training materials demonstrating key principles.

The first two games in this series are now available on my gitHub page:

If I get good feedback on this effort and it seems to be helpful, I will continue it.

This is up to you guys and gals in the community.

Remember, this is am as-time-permits effort and I make no promises about schedules or next releases.

However, I have ideas, including:

  • Classic Action Games
    • baloon popper
    • breakout
    • asteroids
    • space invaders
    • whack a mole
  • Modern Action Games
  • Puzzle Games
    • hangman
  • Board Games
    • tic-tac-toe
    • boggle

Please know, I am actively seeking your input.  If the community doesn’t show an interest, this effort is likely to take a long time to grow or to die-on-the-vine.

It is up to you. So give me clear and specific feedback.  Oh, and be sure to buy SSK2.

Wow!  Just saw this blog post: https://coronalabs.com/blog/2017/02/23/corona-marketplace-contest-simple-game-templates/

I hope I see a lot of folks get involved with this contest!

Please know that my ‘fundamentals series’ has nothing to do with the contest and I think my examples are a little more complicated than what they are looking for.  Also, my code requires SSK2.

If you’re inspired by this post or by the blog announcement, let me suggest you consider submitting entries from my list above?  I won’t be hurt if you do and I would be happy to see such submissions.

Great, thanks for your contribution! Will show it to my students.
