Will Corona continue to support Samsung?

This has been mentioned a couple of times but no direct questions and no comments from Corona.

Due to Samsung’s policy change, it seems they will no longer accept apps unless created / submitted with SDK.

I am not sure if this means just being submitted or built with their SDK

I am assuming Corona do not use the Samsung SDK and don’t plan to either as it seems to be designed for Tizen only - not 100% sure though.

So whats the deal Corona? How will this affect us? Game over for Samsung?

Not sure why this post is being ignored. Granted I haven’t seen any news on this and would like a link to direct proof that this is true because this would be huge if we couldn’t create apps for samsung…

I’m not sure of the implications, but I’m assuming we’re talking about apps submitted to the Samsung App Store. If Samsung is banning apps that aren’t developed with their SDK there isn’t much Corona Labs can do about it. Having said that, your apps will still be available on Samsung devices through the Google Play store.

Ironically I can’t submit apps to the Samsung App store even though I live in Korea. I’m not a Korean citizen and their system requires a Korean National ID for developers with Korean addresses.

It does seem odd that there is no comment from Corona. I would like to know if I should rule out building for Samsung in the future.

If we can submit app’s to the google play store and samsung devices can still use them I don’t see the big deal. The biggest market would be on the Google play store, heck I never even went to the Samsung app store before. Sure it’s lame that we can’t use the samsung app store, but not a deal breaker.

Let me add some context to this discussion.

  1. Corona Labs is aware of the issue. In fact I have apps in the Samsung store so I got the developer email they sent out and the discussion started that day.  We have not made a decision yet on what direction we are going in.

  2. This only impacts the Samsung store.  Not Samsung devices getting apps from Google Play, Amazon or a host of other 3rd party stores.

  3. I’m assuming we would just need to link in their SDK’s for their IAP, etc.  I don’t believe this is dealing with Tizen.

We will post more when we know more.  We are not ignoring the issue.  We are just waiting until we have something of value to tell you.

Cheers for responding with some information.

I know its not a huge deal for most people but it can be a viable store. Some of my dev friends make some decent revenue.

I am guessing you might have to “build for Samsung” to use a completely different SDK/build process. I had read somewhere that all Samsung devices would be rolling out Tizen but perhaps just some of them and keep Android on others)

In all honesty i would be quite happy to say good bye to them and hello to Windows store.

We have an option to select Samsung as a store on the Android build dialog, however that only affects the native.showPopup() when doing reviews or linking to other apps.  I don’t believe we provide any other direct support for anything Samsung specific.

I’m not sure if that could be used as a mechanism to choose to include the extra libraries or not.

I would like to see corona continue to support apps built for the samsung app store. I make more money off the samsung app store than on google play. Please, please update corona to continue to build for the samsung app store!

Tumbs up!

I spoke with samsung on GDC next and they are offensive in getting their piece of the market cake. I don’t think Coronalabs should rule them out.

So… I have been doing apps for Samsung for a while now and really would not like to lose the ability to develop for their store. There is a clause in the rule that indicates that if you are a partner, then you do not need to use their sdk. More specifically they wrote to me:
“This is to inform you that you have been pre-defined as a ‘Partner’ of Samsung Apps based on your past app registration and partnership. You can register apps without any limitations where we look forward to your next app registration.”

I’m sure others received similar emails or could ask to be partners.

Along with that, I was just informed by Nook that my current builds are not comparable with their new device. What can be done about this?
