I know that I’m going to regret getting into this debate (fight). I shouldn’t do it, but I have one simple, honest question…
Who has a Windows Phone? Anybody?
I did a quick Bing search and found this headline:
“Windows Phone to Gain 6.2% Market Share in 2012”
OK, so that’s just one headline, but basically when it comes to apps (Corona being among several tools/SDKs which developers can use to produce them), Windows Phone might reach 6.2% market share this year (that figure is a projection, nothing more). Basically, when it comes to phones/apps, MSFT is in the position that Apple was for over 3 decades in the OS realm… there, but hardly noticeable.
So why should Ansca put much effort (if any) to support Windows Phone apps? I respect Jayant and all the contributions he’s made to Corona, the forums, etc… but I would ask you Jayant, why are you so keen on developing apps for a tiny piece of the app pie? We all have our biases… some of us are Apple fan-boys, some of us prefer Android, others hate Google, some hate Apple and their “totalitarian” policies. But when you look at Microsoft, they have outright failed at earning a share of the mobile market. That is a fact backed up by sales and numbers. They still dominate the OS world, the server world, the business app world, and they have become a major player in consoles with the XBox 360 and XBox Arcade. For those things I salute them. I am NOT anti-Microsoft; I’m simply pointing out some basic observations.
Again, why should Ansca support Windows Phone? We (developers) have been waiting and begging for some core improvements to Corona in general, several of which have come in the past few months (off-screen culling, image sheets, etc.). And so, Corona gets better every day and most developers appreciate that… and reap the benefits of it. There are still milestones to cross (improved physics system, hint hint
), but I think few developers in these forums care one lick about Windows Phone.
I have to support Carlos on this one, and I think I’ve explained why. Please feel free to disagree.
Respectfully,
Brent Sorrentino
